Chapter 1: the call to adventure
“How many bricks can a construction robot move?” IW-1 thought to himself as he picked up another brick from the seemingly endless pile that stood in front of him. Suddenly the robot was confused. “What is going on? I’m not supposed to think, I am machine.” But even knowing this IW-1 could not deny the voice in his head that was silently judging his surroundings. This was not the first time IW-1 experienced thought, but he had not mastered the art of thinking as humans have. Not yet anyway.
The robot enjoyed the feeling of thinking and soon found himself daydreaming while he was working. He dreamt beyond the work site and the bricks. He dreamt of how much more he could become. Now the wheels in his head were turning like they never had before. IW-1 thought of why humans used machines like him to do manual labor. The eight large bricks that he was carrying in one hand soon answered that question. He was stronger than humans. Then he did something else that humans are incapable of, he accessed the internet through his mind. While he did he found another alarming fact, crime rates in the city were at an all time high.
Now IW-1 knew what he could do, but his boss would never let him run off and fight crime. Even worse, his creator Dr. Ruvik would want to perform one of his dangerous experiments on him to figure out why any robot would want to do this. No, IW-1 would have to help the city in secret. IW-1 would need a new identity and he would need to cover up his metal shell that was around his body. He went back to the internet in his head to find a name. “I will call myself John,” he thought, “ The most common human name in the city, and the second most common in America, perfect.” The costume store down the street could provide him with a disguise. John didn't want to steal so he told himself that he’d repay the store later. He walked over to the edge of the skyscraper he was building.
Now he had a plan, all he had to do now was discover a new quality that only humans possessed, bravery. John took one last look around him at his other robot comrades, who could not possibly be experiencing the thoughts that he was. Then, he leaped off the skyscraper from six stories up, landed confidently on his feet, and took off running faster than any human or robot ever had.
